Vietnam is a
beautiful, scenic country with a warm and forgiving people who for the most part
view Americans with respect and admiration. The country is impoverished but
vibrant as it struggles to modernize the economy and government.
This adoption
program will provide opportunities for families to adopt infants and, on rare
occasions, toddlers and older children. Advantages of the program are that there
are few restrictions on family size or on the age of the adopting parents
(within reason). Babies may come home under six months of age for families
wanting to adopt infants.
Married
couples and single women can adopt from Vietnam. Adopting parents can specify
gender, although this may change, as families overwhelmingly choose to adopt
girls rather than boys and the waiting list for a girl typically becomes very
long and boys wait and wait for a family.
Adopting from
Vietnam requires one trip by at least one parent. The trip will likely happen
within 4 months of the family being matched with a child. Local, bilingual
guide/interpreters support families during the trip in Vietnam.
The children are
tested for HIV, Hep B, and VDRL (syphilis) at the time of referral. Families
will receive a photo and some medical information.
Most children have
been abandoned and are cared for in small orphanages. Most families will spend
the majority of their time in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). A larger portion of the
overall expense of adopting from Vietnam will go towards supporting relief work
in Vietnam.
