Maile's
Family

When my husband, Isaac and
I, decided to adopt, we really didn’t know where to turn. We interviewed several
places and once we found Journeys of the Heart, we knew we were home. What
impressed us most was the organization of the program. As time went on, we were
able to appreciate the Journeys family and all of the support they were able to
provide for us. Every detail was mapped out in advance
and we always felt as though things were on track. We felt so safe knowing that
Journeys was going to be there to help us through our adoption experience. We
particularly liked the fact that so much of the Journeys program seemed to be
centered on the birthmother and her well-being. It was important to us to go
through an agency that would treat the birthmother with compassion and
understanding and a firm respect for her wishes. We really wanted to someday be
able to tell our child that his or her birthmother was cared for and nurtured
during this time. |

A month after entering the
program, we got the news that we had been chosen. It was the best phone call of
my life. My father is from Hawaii, so you can imagine our delight when we were
selected by a Hawaiian birthmother! Two months later, she gave birth to a baby
girl. We named her Maile, in honor of the bridge that connects our family with
her birth family. To our delight, Maile’s birthmother asked if she could select
a
Hawaiian middle name. We are so excited to be able to tell Maile someday that
her birthmother took part in naming her. |
| Maile continues to melt
our hearts daily. Every day we feel so grateful to have her in our lives. Even though
she’s too young to understand now, we always talk about her birthmother and what
a gift she’s given us all. We hope to raise Maile with a strong sense of self
and an understanding of just how many people love her. We will always be
grateful to Journeys for bringing Maile home to us. We feel so good about our
decision to join the Journeys family. They guided us with a loving hand, while
at the same time making sure that all details were tended to. We couldn’t have
asked for a better way start to our family. |
