Special News For Women Of Color Considering Adoption For Their Child

We welcome you to Journeys of the Heart Domestic Program Services.

New Office Opens In Hawaii

We treasure all expectant mothers and want to give you the best of our adoption services if you decide adoption is the best alternative for you and your child.   JOH staff has no other agenda than to help you do what you think is best for your child.

We have offices in Oregon, Washington, Hawaii, and Illinois and we are able to work with expectant parents and adopting parents from all across the United States and other countries, as well.  The link at the bottom of this page will take you to our toll free phones, available to you 24 hours a day.

We can give you some services that we think you will find valuable during this time.

1)    A counselor you can speak with frequently about our services, explore all your options, and if you choose adoption, assist you in coordinating all the services you will need (medical, food, shelter).

2)    We will seek adopting parents who are of the same race as you. If that is not possible, JOH has many families who are educated about raising children who are adopted across racial lines

3)    Our staff has adopted transracially and understands the need for children adopted across racial lines to have same race contact and to develop a proud ethnic identity.  All the JOH adoptive parents are committed to doing their best to assist your child to be a person proud of their race.

4)    JOH staff has assisted expectant mothers with their adoptions who are:  African American, Chinese, Philippine, Pacific Islander (Polynesian, Micronesian), East Indian, Native American, and Hispanic.

5)    You choose how much contact you have with the child and adopting parents.  All JOH parents embrace open adoption and are willing to have at least one visit a year as well as photos and letter exchanges.  If you don’t want open adoption JOH has parents who will be pleased to be in a more closed arrangement.

6)    We understand and value cultural differences.  We know that what your family thinks may be of great importance to you.  We will include them in all the process if that’s what you wish.

7)    All JOH adopting families have been carefully investigated with criminal and child abuse checks, physical exams, IRS documents, references, and certificates that document that they are.  In addition, a social worker spends many hours interviewing them to determine their suitability to raise an adopted child.
